Washington SR-22 Insurance
Washington state law requires SR-22 auto insurance certification (also referred to as a proof of financial responsibility form) as proof of a liability insurance policy for reinstatement of a driver license after one's license has been suspended or revoked. SR-22 policies differ from any other type of insurance policy because the insurance company must notify the Department of Licensing if the policyholder's auto insurance policy lapses or is terminated. The insurance company must also be licensed in the state of Washington.
In Washington, drivers have to carry a SR-22 auto insurance document for up to three consecutive years before their driver license is reinstated. SR-22 policies are used in DUI cases, repeat traffic convictions, failure to pay a judgment in motor vehicle accidents and to prevent suspension or license revocation.
If the SR-22 policy is cancelled for any reason, the policyholder will have to start the three-year period over again, beginning with day one.
